GDPR and Umbraco: How to update to the new data protection law
Choosing a CMS It is a task that every business has to consider at some point, because there is not yet a perfect one. When making the choice, there are several factors that must be taken into account: the SEO, the security, the options to promote marketing, the level of personalization, etc. And in recent months, one more point has been added that must be taken into account: the GDPR.
La GDPR (acronym in English, better known) or RGPD (General Data Protection Regulation) is the law that cannot stop talking about among those who, in some way, work with personal data.
With any CMS you can comply with this law, but if the system itself already has related functionalities integrated, it will be a lot easier and faster carry out this task. This is exactly what Umbraco has done in version 7.9.0, which they have called “The GDPR Upgrade”.
New Features of The GDPR Upgrade
These are the features that have been added to Umbraco to facilitate compliance with this law:
1. Consent API
This API provides a simple way to record that a person has given their consent to a certain action; for example, to send them commercial emails.
This makes it very easy to generate reports or check what consents a certain user has given.
2. Events
There are new events in the Umbraco backoffice that make it possible to know who has done a certain action. For example, “User X has given user Y permission to access section Z”.
3. Sensitive Information
When you save user data in Umbraco, you can mark properties as sensitive information. This way, this information can only be read by people who have the appropriate permissions.
This is what a user who does not have permission to view sensitive information sees.
4. Exporting data
A functionality has been added to export all a user's data to a file.
This is very useful for quickly seeing all the data you have for a certain user.
The importance that Umbraco attaches to the GDPR is such that, apart from adding functionalities to its CMS, Umbraco has a section of its website dedicated exclusively to GDPR. More information about this version can be found in the Umbraco's official post.
